Proverbs 6:16-19

16 ¶These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

17  (1) A proud look,  (2) a lying tongue,  (3) and hands that shed innocent blood,

18 (4) An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, (5) feet that be swift in running to mischief,

19 (6) A false witness that speaketh lies,  (7) and he that soweth discord among brethren.

Everyone who follows the christian religion should know or at least usually knows what these 7 deadly sins are. Are you guilty of any of these? do you understand what these sins are?. I could probably write up a series of post on each one of these topics but I think I will keep it to one post. At least for now.

DEADLY SIN NUMBER 1: A PROUD LOOK AKA PRIDE

There is more than one type of pride that we as people can have. Not all pride is bad or evil however and it is important to understand the difference. I can be proud of a job well done, or my children’s accomplishments. I can be proud of my associations so long as i do not put myself above others

The most common pride that I think all of us at some point are likely guilty of is not accepting help. Feeling like if we do so we are week or incapable of doing the task given to us in this life. To turn down help is prideful and when we do so we deny others the opportunity to provide service. Pride is more than just being unwilling to have other help you. Pride can also be thinking you are better than others. Putting yourself above others and refusing to impart of our substance to those less fortunate. Thinking that the poor and needy did this to themselves so you will not help is prideful, it is also judgmental. This seems to me to be a very common form of pride.

“And now, my brethren, I have spoken unto you concerning pride; and those of you which have afflicted your neighbor, and persecuted him because ye were proud in your hearts, of the things which God hath given you, what say ye of it?”

DEADLY SIN NUMBER 2: A LYING TONGUE

Lying is for me personally one of my pet peeves. It really upsets me when people lie to me. Lying has many forms and can be done in many ways. Just watch your average political campaign. True words can be used to deceive just as easily as outright lies. No one can tell a lie without it be intentional. The truth can be used to lead people to believe one thing when your intent is something completely different. Using selective truths and leaving out important information to hide the truth is just as much lying as stating a fact you know to be wrong. In the words of the great Captain Picard to young Wesley Crusher in the Star Trek The Next Generation episode The First Duty “A lie of Omission is still a lie”

Sometimes we believe something to be true when it is not, this is not a lie. It is not possible to lie and not know your lying. If your actions and words are designed to deceived, even when speaking things that are true, It is still a lie and it is wrong.

DEADLY SIN NUMBER 3: HANDS THAT SHED INNOCENT BLOOD

Well this is pretty self explanatory. Murder is wrong. period. Sadly our world leaders continue to perpetuate this crime using honest citizens in our military via deception to commit these atrocities. Our leaders both here in Canada and the world over are responsible for far more innocent deaths than the very people they tell us they are fighting for our benefit. It is not just military killing innocents but we have thousands of cases of police brutality, killing of innocent civilians being condoned by those we trust to protect us. The RCMP Shooting a member of anonymousSammy Yatim killed by Toronto police, Polish man Tasered to death,  shooting of Michael Brown and Sandra Blands death are just a few examples that come to mind.

Murder is being committed at rates by those who we trust to lead and protect us far more and in excess than murder by the general citizenry. These atrocities will not cease till the people stand up to them and God will hold them accountable at the last day.

DEADLY SIN NUMBER 4: A HEART THAT DEVISETH WICKED IMAGINATIONS

Day dreaming or thinking of plots and plans to commit evil. These acts are spoken of regular throughout the scriptures. The  book of Mormon talks about secret combinations. This deadly sin can be summarized in the modern day counsel of letting virtue garnish your thoughts to protect yourself from evil. We must be sure to guard our minds from thinking of evil, wicked and unholy things. This is not easy to do however it is important to keep ourselves worthy, pure and clean before God.

DEADLY SIN NUMBER 5: FEET THAT BE SWIFT IN RUNNING TO MISCHIEF

Don’t be easily tempted. Don’t give into peer pressure or popular opinion of the day. Don’t willfully involve your self in activities or organizations that commits acts of evil. This is about keeping yourself un spotted in the ways of the world. Peer pressure can be a powerful thing. Social media has shown that peer pressure can even lead to the death of vulnerable people via acts of cyber bullying. This is a huge issue of the day and it is important that we stand firm in our convictions. Do not let other dictate or decide your course for you.

DEADLY SIN NUMBER 6: A FALSE WITNESS THAT SPEAKETH LIES

Gossip and spreading mean and vicious things about others is being a false witness. Being a false witness is not just about whether you speak lies about others or events but rather how we speak about them. We must always ensure that we are not speaking evil of others. Thumper in the classic movie Bambi summarized this quite well. “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all”. Admittedly I am not perfect at this. Gossip is not always just saying bad things about others.  Speaking unkindly about others can be honest in our opinions but it is also important we understand how we affect others because what we say and how we make others look can be distorted and changed from others perception turning us into false witnesses.

DEADLY SIN NUMBER 7: HE THAT SOWETH DISCORD AMONG HIS BRETHREN

So much of reality tv is based on this very concept. Look at shows like Big Brother and Survivor. It’s all about plotting and scheming against others. We pit friends and foes against each other for the entertainment value. We publicly shame people for engaging in acts we disagree with and resorts to insults and name calling when someone does or says something we don’t like. Rarely do people, especially on internet forums engage is useful conversation. By doing so we sow discord among our brothers and sisters in God.

If you find yourself doing any of these things. My Advice to you is 2 words. STOP IT. I know it is not always that easy. Perfecting ourselves and our lives takes time, effort and dedication to something better for ourselves. With God’s help nothing is impossible.

And that is the gospel according to Andrew
